Prosthodontics, or advanced restorative dentistry, is the specialty of dentistry dedicated to the replacement and reconstruction of teeth or other important oral structures. It involves capping (crowns), dental reconstruction, dental implants, complete and partial dentures (“removable plates” or false teeth), and cosmetic dentistry. A prosthodontist is trained to treat complicated and difficult dental problems. To be called a Prosthodontist, a dentist must complete a three year, full-time, specialty residency program at an accredited university. While many general dentists routinely perform prosthodontic procedures in their practices, only a certified, specially trained Prosthodontist is permitted to announce to the public that they are Specialists in Prosthodontics.
Through improved techniques and modern technology, we are now able to offer more options for restoring a tooth back to its normal shape, appearance, and function.
Dentures are very durable appliances and will last 5 to 8 years, but may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear and changes in the jaw bone.
A crown is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape, size and appearance. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.
A dental bridge is a fixed (cemented, non-removable) appliance and is an excellent way to replace missing teeth. Dental bridges are highly durable and will last many years, however they may need to be replaced or re-cemented due to normal wear.
